Triumph 400: the complete Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 guide

The Triumph 400 is the most accessible platform in the Modern Classics range: a 398 cc single-cylinder producing around 40 hp, A2 licence compatible, available as the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X and Scrambler 400 XC. This complete guide brings together their technical specifications, the differences between the three models and every FCR Accessoires part designed for them, with a part-by-part compatibility table. All these parts were born from the Speed 400 Pulse and Scrambler 400 Escape builds by the FCR Original workshop in Chauvigny, France.

The Triumph 400 platform at a glance

Unveiled in 2023, the 400 platform marks the arrival of a new generation of Modern Classics: more compact, lighter and more accessible than the 900 and 1200 Bonnevilles, without giving up the neo-retro design that defines Triumph. It appeals to new riders and experienced motorcyclists alike, looking for a simple, lively bike that is easy to live with every day.

Its main strength for customisation is modularity. A single mechanical base powers a roadster, the Speed 400, and two scramblers, the 400 X and 400 XC. Many parts are therefore shared across the range, while others are specific to how each model is ridden. That is exactly what this guide covers.

Triumph 400 technical specifications

All three models share the same heart: the TR-Series single-cylinder, developed to deliver torque low and in the mid-range rather than peak power. It is smooth in town, strong on back roads and torquey enough for gravel tracks.

Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X or 400 XC: which Triumph 400?

Same engine, three characters. The choice of model directly shapes the build, and therefore the choice of accessories.

Triumph Speed 400

The roadster of the range. 17-inch wheels, an upright and low riding position, a compact footprint: the Speed 400 is made for the city and twisty roads. It is the ideal base for a sharp neo-retro build, a light cafe racer or a stripped-back roadster, like our Speed 400 Pulse.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X

The versatile version. Its 19-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension let it leave the tarmac on gravel roads while staying comfortable every day. It suits classic scrambler builds as well as more adventure-oriented setups.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC

The strongest adventure focus. The 400 XC takes the 400 X base and adds spoked wheels and a specification geared towards mixed terrain. It is on this version that the workshop built the Scrambler 400 Escape.

The platform also extends to the Speed T4, Thruxton 400 and Tracker 400. Some accessories fit them too: exact compatibility is listed on each product page and in the dedicated collections.

The workshop vision: Pulse and Escape

At FCR Original, we did not approach the Triumph 400 as an entry-level bike, but as a premium base capable of becoming a real project. Two builds came out of it, and with them the FCR Accessoires range.

The Speed 400 Pulse refines the roadster's lines: a shorter rear end, compact signalling and a more expressive muffler. The Scrambler 400 Escape reveals the escape potential of the XC: radiator guard, fork guards, engine guard, chain guard, muffler, side luggage, license plate holder with turn signals and Mini Bates turn signals.

Rather than radically transforming the bike, the aim was to keep its natural balance while giving it more personality. Every part developed for these projects is available from FCR Accessoires. For the full adventure build, see our Scrambler 400 Escape guide.

The Triumph 400 accessories catalogue by use

Here is the full range of FCR Accessoires parts for the 400 platform, sorted by use. All are plug and play unless stated otherwise. Scrambler-only parts are flagged, and the compatibility table below sums everything up model by model.

Sound and breathing

The exhaust muffler first changes how the rear of the bike reads, thanks to its short format, then its sound signature, more present and deeper. It pairs with the BMC Performance air filter, washable and reusable, which lets the single-cylinder breathe more freely.

The workshop tip

A muffler is not about making noise, it is about giving the bike a signature. On a single-cylinder, you want a rounder, deeper sound at low revs, where you actually ride, rather than high volume at the top of the rev range.

Rear end and signalling

This is the most spectacular transformation for the money. The license plate holder with integrated turn signals shortens the rear and removes the added-on look. The road-legal Mini Bates turn signals lighten the silhouette front and rear. The chain guard completes the set with a cleaner drivetrain finish.

Protection

The radiator, lower engine and fork are the most exposed areas, especially on a Scrambler ridden off the tarmac. The radiator guard protects a vital component on every model. On the Scrambler 400 X and XC, the engine guard, fork guards and headlight grill form real adventure armour without weighing down the lines.

Suspension and braking

On the 400 platform, stability and a sense of control depend heavily on the rear. That is why there is a specific shock for each model: the M-Shock Speed 400 rear shock and the M-Shock Scrambler 400 X rear shock, the latter also available in a lowered version to reduce seat height. For braking, the Goodridge 90° Banjo brake hose brings a sharper lever feel.

The workshop tip

If you were to change just one mechanical part on a Triumph 400, it would be the rear shock. The bike instantly becomes more predictable when leaned over and more stable on broken surfaces, far more than with a power gain.

Travel and versatility

The SW-Motech side mount and saddlebag kit lets you carry the essentials neatly, for the daily commute as well as the weekend escape. The JMP tank protector preserves the paint during long days in the saddle.

Cockpit

Mirrors change the look of the cockpit a lot. The Highsider Montana lighten the handlebar, while the Triumph Sport and Classic kits play respectively on machined aluminium and vintage elegance.

Maintenance and security

To keep the bike reliable all year round: the BS15 smart charger during winter storage, the Power Box PB-02 booster for emergency starts, and the Teflon-lined Venhill clutch cable for smoother clutch action.

Compatibility table by model

Not every part fits every model. This table sums up the compatibility of each FCR Accessoires part on the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X and XC. If in doubt about your model year, the product page is the reference.

Triumph 400 and the A2 licence

At around 40 hp, close to 29 kW, the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X and XC stay under the 35 kW limit set by the European A2 licence. They are therefore accessible to new riders without a restrictor kit, which makes them ideal bases for a first personalised motorcycle.

The FCR Accessoires parts presented here are not intended to change the homologated power output: they work on style, protection, ergonomics and comfort. To go further, see our article on A2 motorcycle accessories.

Frequently asked questions

What are the technical specifications of the Triumph 400?

The Triumph 400 platform is built around the liquid-cooled 398 cc TR-Series single-cylinder engine, producing around 40 hp and 37.5 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed gearbox. It powers the Speed 400, a neo-retro roadster on 17-inch wheels, as well as the Scrambler 400 X and 400 XC, which move to a 19-inch front wheel and longer-travel suspension.

What is the difference between the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X and Scrambler 400 XC?

All three share the same engine and technical base. The Speed 400 is an urban and road roadster, lower and lighter. The Scrambler 400 X adds a 19-inch front wheel and more suspension travel for gravel roads. The Scrambler 400 XC pushes the adventure focus further with spoked wheels and a specification geared towards off-road riding.

Is the Triumph 400 compatible with the A2 licence?

Yes. At around 40 hp, close to 29 kW, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X and XC stay under the 35 kW limit of the European A2 licence, with no restrictor needed. It is one of the reasons for their success with new riders, who can customise them from day one with plug and play accessories.

Which accessories should I fit first on a Triumph 400?

For an immediately visible transformation, start with the license plate holder with integrated turn signals, then the chain guard. For character, fit the muffler and the BMC air filter. On a Scrambler ridden off the tarmac, the engine guard, radiator guard and fork guards come first.

Are FCR Accessoires Triumph 400 parts plug and play?

Yes. FCR Accessoires parts fit on the original mounting points of the Triumph 400, with no cutting or welding, and fitting is reversible. Instructions come with every product. The exact compatibility by model and model year is specified on each product page.

Does the Triumph 400 muffler pass the roadworthiness test?

The FCR Accessoires muffler for the Triumph 400 is presented as roadworthiness-test compliant in its original fitting configuration. The Mini Bates turn signals are road legal. As regulations can vary from country to country, we recommend checking your local rules before fitting.

Do Scrambler 400 parts fit the Speed 400?

Only partly. The license plate holder, turn signals, radiator guard, chain guard, air filter and luggage are shared across the platform. However, the engine guard, fork guards, headlight grill and side number plates are dedicated to the Scrambler 400 X and XC, and each model has its own rear shock.

What warranty applies to Triumph 400 accessories?

All FCR Accessoires parts come with a 2-year warranty and ship within 24 to 48 working hours from the workshop in Chauvigny, near Poitiers. The team can be reached at +33 5 49 62 03 26 or on WhatsApp at +33 7 72 50 18 27 to confirm compatibility before you order.
