Complete BMW R NineT Guide: Everything You Need to Customise Your Flat-Twin

The BMW R NineT is arguably the most refined motorcycle customisation base on the market today. Since its launch in 2014, this neo-retro roadster powered by an air/oil-cooled boxer engine has won over enthusiasts and builders worldwide. Its removable rear subframe, modular architecture and five variants make it a motorcycle designed from the outset to be transformed. At FCR Accessoires, we have been building R NineTs for over 10 years in our workshop in Chauvigny, near Poitiers, France. This guide covers everything you need to know to customise yours: technical specs, variants explained, our workshop builds, and the complete accessories catalogue.

BMW R NineT technical specifications

The BMW R NineT (2014-2023) is powered by a 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled flat-twin boxer engine producing 109 hp at 7,750 rpm and 116 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. This flat-twin sits in a tubular steel frame with a bolted rear subframe, a fundamental feature that sets it apart from every other BMW: this subframe comes off in minutes, opening the door to radical rear-end transformations.

Engine: 1,170 cc flat-twin boxer, air/oil-cooled, 109 hp, 116 Nm
Transmission: 6-speed gearbox, shaft drive
Frame: Tubular steel, bolted removable rear subframe
Suspension: 46 mm inverted fork (Classic) or telescopic (Pure) / Adjustable rear monoshock
Brakes: Dual 320 mm front discs, single 265 mm rear disc, ABS
Weight: 222 kg wet (Classic)
Fuel tank: 18 litres (aluminium on Classic, steel on Pure)
Production: 2014-2023 (replaced by the R12 NineT in 2024)

The shaft drive eliminates chain maintenance and contributes to the bike's clean aesthetic. ABS braking with dual 320 mm front discs provides strong and progressive deceleration, even when loaded with accessories. The 18-litre tank offers comfortable range for longer rides.

The 5 BMW R NineT variants explained

The R NineT comes in five variants sharing the same 1,170 cc boxer engine but differing in equipment, riding position and customisation potential. Choosing the right base is the first decision in any successful build project.

R NineT Classic (standard)

The most premium and iconic model. Brushed/welded aluminium tank, inverted fork, radial front brakes, removable rear subframe. The best base for cafe racer projects, performance/premium builds and high-end full custom projects.

R NineT Pure

The accessible, minimalist version. Classic telescopic fork, simplified equipment, more understated finishes, but the same boxer block. Restricted to 95 hp, it is A2 licence compatible, an important advantage for newer riders. Excellent for budget-conscious projects and complete transformations: its neutral base lends itself to any direction.

R NineT Scrambler

The off-road approach to the flat-twin. 19-inch front wheel, softer suspension, high-mounted exhaust, raised riding position. Highly sought-after for scrambler/adventure builds, rugged looks and robust mixed-use builds.

R NineT Urban G/S

A direct homage to the legendary BMW R80 G/S. Vintage trail DNA, strong Dakar styling, 19-inch front wheel, high mudguard, flat seat, iconic BMW Motorsport colours. Ideal for neo-retro adventure projects and rally/Dakar-inspired builds.

R NineT Racer

The "turnkey cafe racer" of the range. Low clip-on handlebars, headlight fairing, sporty riding position inspired by vintage racing bikes. Its highly oriented design paradoxically makes it less modular: a base rarely used for custom builds, but appealing as-is for those who want a cafe racer without going through the workshop.

Our FCR Accessoires recommendation:

If you are unsure, the R NineT Classic is our top pick for a first customisation project. Its aluminium tank, inverted fork and removable rear subframe offer the best starting point. The Pure is an excellent alternative if you plan to change everything: better to start from a more affordable base. These are in fact the two bases that FCR Original uses for its bespoke builds, with pre-owned motorcycles carefully selected from its network. Worth noting: the Pure is A2 licence compatible (95 hp), a real asset for riders early in their journey.

Our FCR Original builds on R NineT

At FCR Original, every build is a vision. Our Chauvigny workshop (86, France) develops three ranges on the R NineT platform, each illustrating a different aesthetic and technical direction. The process is always the same: selection of a pre-owned R NineT or R NineT Pure from our network, design with Alex, our designer, then handcrafted assembly by our team (Matheo for shaping parts, Yoann for assembly and reliability, Celine for paint and finishing). Every build is 100% customisable, from paint colour to leather choice for the seat. And above all, every FCR Accessoires part you find in our catalogue was first tested, adjusted and validated on these builds before being offered for sale.

R NineT Classic Heritage

Our signature build. The BMW Classic Heritage embodies the spirit of authenticity and timeless elegance that defines every FCR Original creation. Built on an R NineT Classic or Pure base, every visible element is reworked in our workshop: the Street Bobber exhaust system reshapes the low profile, exposed K&N filters replace the stock air box, and the Classic Heritage tank sets the tone. The silhouette is balanced, understated yet expressive, as elegant as it is capable.

R NineT Urban

The Urban range embodies the spirit of freedom and boldness that defines FCR Original. Designed for riders who refuse anonymity, it blends striking urban aesthetics with uncompromising customisation. On this build, the Nardo Grey finish brings contemporary elegance, while the FCR Accessoires rear loop kit with seat completely redraws the silhouette. Every detail, from master cylinder covers to engine guard, contributes to the visual coherence of the whole. The look is both contemporary and timeless, equally at home in the city and beyond.

R NineT OffRoad

The Off-Road range embodies the spirit of exploration and authenticity that characterises every FCR Original creation. Designed for riders drawn to adventure and varied terrain, it combines bold off-road aesthetics with mechanical robustness. On this build, the green paint and brown seat reinforce the adventurer look. The Street Bobber exhaust and K&N filters unleash the boxer's character, the side number plates and headlight grill assert the off-road identity, and the Heritage foot pegs offer superior grip when standing. A motorcycle ready to explore as much as to stand out, equally capable on road and on trails.

BMW R NineT accessories catalogue by category

Here is the full range of accessories we offer for the R NineT, organised by category. Each part is designed in our Chauvigny workshop or selected from the best partner brands (K&N, Hyperpro, Shock Factory, AC Schnitzer). All are plug & play compatible with R NineT Classic, Pure, Urban G/S, Scrambler and Racer variants, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Exhaust and performance

The exhaust is the part that most radically transforms an R NineT, both visually and acoustically. Our Street Bobber 2-into-1 system in brushed stainless steel with TIG welding reshapes the entire low profile. The titanium silencer delivers weight savings and a distinct sound with its iridescent blue finish that deepens with every ride.

  • Street Bobber exhaust system, complete 2-into-1, brushed stainless steel, TIG welding, removable DB Killer included. Compatible with all variants.
  • Titanium silencer, grade 2, evolving iridescent finish, notable weight savings. Compatible with all variants.

Intake and filtration

Removing the air box is one of the most popular modifications on the R NineT. It visually frees the boxer cylinders and improves engine breathing. Combined with K&N filters, it gives the flat-twin a sharper character on acceleration.

Cockpit

The handlebar, mirrors and bar ends define the R NineT's style and ergonomics. Our Heritage handlebar in drag bar or flat-tracker position mounts on the stock fixings and radically changes the motorcycle's silhouette.

Customising your R NineT: where to start?

With so many options available, it is natural to wonder where to begin. Here is our approach, drawn from over 10 years of workshop builds.

Step 1: define the direction. Cafe racer, scrambler, bobber, stripped-back roadster? The style you are aiming for determines the first parts to change. If you are not sure yet, our three builds above are a good starting point for inspiration.

Step 2: exhaust and filtration. These are the two modifications that transform an R NineT the most. The Street Bobber system reshapes the profile, and the air box removal kit with K&N filters frees the cylinders and gives the boxer a more expressive character. Together, these two parts change the look, the sound and the riding feel.

Step 3: the cockpit. The Heritage handlebar, mirrors and bar ends are the parts that most personalise the view you have of your motorcycle every day. They install in under an hour and the result is immediate.

Step 4: the finishing touches. Rocker covers, radiator grill, foot pegs, licence plate holder: every detail reinforces the visual coherence of the whole. This is the difference between a motorcycle with a few accessories and a properly built motorcycle.

The shortcut: the Essential Kit

If you want to move fast, our BMW R NineT Heritage Essential Kit bundles the key parts in a single purchase. This is the selection we recommend for a coherent first transformation without second-guessing.

FAQ: the most frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 5 BMW R NineT variants?+
The R NineT Classic is the premium model (aluminium tank, inverted fork, removable rear subframe), ideal for cafe racer and full custom projects. The Pure is the accessible, minimalist version, perfect for complete transformations on a tighter budget. The Scrambler features a 19-inch front wheel for mixed road/trail use. The Urban G/S is a homage to the R80 G/S with Dakar styling. The Racer is a turnkey cafe racer with clip-ons and a fairing. All share the same 1,170 cc boxer engine producing 109 hp.
Are FCR Accessoires parts compatible with all R NineT variants?+
Most of our parts (handlebars, fuel caps, radiator grills, licence plate holders, rocker covers, foot pegs) are compatible with all variants. Some specific parts (Street Bobber exhaust system, rear loop kits) may have restrictions depending on the configuration. Exact compatibility is listed on each product page.
Can the parts be installed at home?+
The vast majority of our parts are plug & play: foot pegs, fuel caps, grills, licence plate holders, turn signals, rocker covers, handlebars. They install with standard tools following the provided instructions. The exhaust system and air box removal kit require more skill, we recommend a workshop for these installations.
Which variant is best for a cafe racer project?+
The R NineT Classic is our recommendation: brushed aluminium tank, inverted fork, removable rear subframe, premium finishes. The Pure is an alternative if your budget is tighter. The Racer is already a factory cafe racer, but its highly oriented design paradoxically makes it less modular for a custom project.
Is the air box removal kit road legal?+
K&N filters are approved replacement components. MOT inspections focus primarily on emissions, noise (with DB Killer fitted) and safety, not on the type of air filter used. If in doubt, consult your local testing authority.
What is the difference between the R NineT and the R12 NineT?+
The R NineT (2014-2023) and the R12 NineT (2024+) share the same 1,170 cc boxer engine at 109 hp. But the R12 is a new generation with a redesigned monobloc frame, a 45 mm golden inverted fork from the S 1000 R, Keyless start and spoke wheels. Accessories are not interchangeable. FCR Accessoires offers dedicated ranges for each model.
Are FCR Accessoires parts made in France?+
Our exclusive parts (handlebars, engine guards, grills, licence plate holders, seats, rocker covers, rear loops) are designed and manufactured in our workshop in Chauvigny, near Poitiers. Some partner brands (Hyperpro, Shock Factory, K&N, AC Schnitzer) are third-party references selected for their quality and compatibility.
