How to prepare your motorcycle for winter | FCR Accessoires 2025 maintenance & protection guide

Winter waits for no one. Preparing your motorcycle methodically means protecting the mechanics, maintaining performance, and starting again in the spring with an impeccable machine. Here is the expert FCR Accessoires guide to winterize your Triumph, BMW R NineT/R12/R18 or any modern motorcycle, with a selection of technical accessories from our Winter Ready 2025 campaign.

Why prepare your motorcycle for winter

Cold, humidity, de-icing salt and prolonged immobilization attack the paint, oxidize the metals and degrade the fluids. A serious preparation limits wear, avoids electrical and mechanical surprises, and preserves the value of your motorcycle. At FCR Accessoires, we have selected useful parts and kits to protect, maintain and improve your machine during the cold season.

Cleaning & pre-wintering care

We start with a complete cleaning: rims, swingarm, underside of the engine, hidden areas under the fairings. Dry carefully, then apply a hydrophobic protective film on sensitive parts. The K&N air filters benefit from a dedicated washing/oil to maintain optimal breathing during restart.

  • K&N AirGuard filter socks for riding in wet weather → view collection
  • Essential kits (R NineT / Triumph / Royal Enfield) : consumables and basic tools

Engine & exposed parts protection

Winter imposes projections, thermal shocks and gravel. An Engine Guard protects the lower engine and manifolds. A Radiator Grill prevents impacts and limits fin clogging. These protections are smart investments if you ride all year round.

Filters & intake: breathe clean

A clogged filter disrupts the fuel mixture, increases consumption and tarnishes the feeling. Take advantage of the winter period to clean, oil, or even replace it. K&N elements are designed to last and are easily reconditioned.

  • K&N BMW Filters (R NineT, R18) → see selection
  • Complete filter kits for home maintenance

Chain & transmission

Clean the chain with a mild degreaser, dry, then lubricate on a warm section. Adjust the tension according to the manual. Chain guards limit projections and keep the area clean.

Lighting & visibility

The days are short, the visibility is changing. Check bulbs, connectors, and the tightness of the optics. A high-performance headlight kit, robust headlight grilles and a windshield protect and improve comfort on cold journeys.

Technical checklist before storage

  • Fuel: fill up + stabilizing additive if long immobilization.
  • Battery: keep it on a slow charge (smart charger). Disconnect if necessary.
  • Tires: adjust the pressure, move the motorcycle regularly or put it on stands.
  • Braking: check the thickness of the pads and the condition of the discs.
  • Fluids: change/add fluid if the deadline is near, especially before prolonged storage.
  • Transmission: tension and lubrication done after riding.
  • Fasteners: run a torque wrench over sensitive points.

Tip: group consumables and tools in an Essential Kit adapted to your model → see the Winter Ready collection

Smart storage during winter

Store in a dry place, away from UV rays and temperature variations. Avoid damp floors and direct contact with cement: insulate the tires with a mat or shims. Run the engine for a few seconds only if you can briefly bring it up to temperature, otherwise refrain from doing so to avoid condensing water in the exhaust.

For protection, opt for a breathable cover. More enveloping mudguards and protections from FCR Accessoires limit projections if you ride in winter. Discover our dedicated options for BMW R18, BMW R NineT, and Triumph Modern Classic in the selection below.

Spring restart

Take a complete tour of the motorcycle: levels, battery, pressure, brakes. Start without opening the throttle, let the idle stabilize, then ride gently while everything warms up. After a few kilometers, check the chain, tightening, and tire pressure again.

FAQ

Which accessories are really essential for winter?

Priority items include an Engine Guard to protect the lower engine, a Radiator Grill to protect against impacts, a K&N filter maintenance kit for clean breathing, and an essential kit to match your motorcycle for minor repairs. All in the Winter Ready 2025 selection.

Should I remove the battery during winter storage?

Not necessarily. The ideal is a smart charger in trickle charge mode. If the motorcycle remains in an unheated place without mains access, you can remove the battery and store it in a dry place, charged, protected from frost.

Should you ride from time to time in winter?

Yes, if conditions permit. A ride of at least 20–30 minutes brings everything back to temperature, removes moisture, and greases the chain. Equip the motorcycle with a suitable windshield, mudguard and check the lighting for maximum safety.

How to avoid corrosion and deposits?

Thoroughly clean before storing, dry, then apply a light protectant to the metal parts. Grease the chain after a short ride. FCR Accessoires protections (engine guards, radiator grilles, mudguards) also reduce exposure.

What tire pressure for winter storage?

Maintain the recommended road pressure. If immobilized for a long period, move the motorcycle regularly or use stands/supports to avoid flat spots.
